Communication Theory – Feel it Move !

Yes !!!!

No ? ?

In February, 1891, the first few advertisements started appearing in papers: “Ouija, the Wonderful Talking Board,” boomed a Pittsburgh toy and novelty shop, describing a magical device that answered questions “about the past, present and future with marvelous accuracy” and promised “never-failing amusement and recreation for all the classes,” a link “between the known and unknown, the material and immaterial.” Another advertisement in a New York newspaper declared it “interesting and mysterious” and testified, “as sProven at Patent Office before it was allowed. Price, $1.50.” Read more at Smithsonian Source

The first patent offers no explanation as to how the device works, just asserts that it does. That ambiguity and mystery was part of a more or less conscious marketing effort. “These were very shrewd businessmen,” notes Murch; the less the Kennard company said about how the board worked, the more mysterious it seemed—and the more people wanted to buy it. “Ultimately, it was a money-maker. They didn’t care why people thought it worked.

Spirit boards have a long and fascinating history dating back long before the Ouija name became associated with them. But it was the Kennard Novelty Company that launched the “mystifying oracle” from homemade contraption to household name. William Fuld didn’t invent the board, but he did take over the company and turn it into the Ouija Novelty Company in 1892. It was a lucrative enterprise, and the Baltimore-based business quickly expanded. Strangely enough, William Fuld died from a fall off the roof of his Harford Avenue factory–a building the Ouija board told him to build. ( Is Ouija’s Dark Side Just Another Witch Hunt? )

Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.”

    1. Thanks Derrick. I think one of the advantages of a blog post is that it creates a potential space for new forms of communicating by blending different forms of media together in creative ways. The message does not have to be conveyed in just text or images. You can create a sequence that brings all media together and they can be hyper-linked to other material.

You can even look at it in different sequence if you choose. For example if you play the Perhaps video and watch the animated GIFs move to the music it creates another level of meaning ( creepy or humorous depending on your mind set). 😀

    1. Before the movie came out, Ouija boards had a mixed perception by the public. Most saw it as fun hokum or something otherworldly / weird coincidence. After the movie, it became a stock movie trope for attracting evil spirits and the devil and this became solidified in the minds of many, especially those with strong religious beliefs. The shower scene in Psycho had a similar impact on movie audiences, but most religious folk did not declare showers the devil’s plaything. 😀

      1. Thank you. Very interesting about the Ouija. Though I must admit to getting the heeby jeebies at times in my old house, which had a creepy bathroom with an old light that didn’t work very well so it cast weird shadows. To matters worse, it had one of those old fashioned plastic curtains.

  1. Such a unique and amazing style you present… Very catching and eye opening… Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks very much for commenting. 🙂 In part, this blog grew out of the intersection of ideas and digital processing work from my Dark Pines Photo blog and my Dark Pines Media Literacy blog.

You will find a mix of more natural style photography and digital work on the photography blog. The Media Literacy blog is more informational and education based. 🙂
