There is a Crack in Everything

there-is-a-crack-in-everything

The birds, they sang
At the break of day,
Start again.
I seemed I heard them say.
Don’t dwell on what
Has passed away
Or what is yet to be.
Ah, the wars
They will be fought again.
The holy dove,
She will be caught again –
Bought and sold
And bought again –
The dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring.
Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack, a crack in everything.
That’s how the light gets in.

We asked for signs,

and
The signs were sent:
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent.
Yeah the widowhood
Of every single government,
Signs for all to see.

I can’t run no more
With that lawless crowd,
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loud –
But they’ve summoned, they’ve summoned up
A thundercloud –
And they’re going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything –
That’s how the light gets in.

You can add up the parts,
But you won’t have the sum.
You can strike up the march
On your little broken drum .
Every heart, every heart
To love will come
But like a refugee…….

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything –
That’s how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything –
That’s how the light gets in
That’s how the light gets in
That’s how, the light gets in.

  1. A wonderful poet who followed his own calling, worked hard and stood out from the crowd. I love his words and the mood he could evoke just by saying them to music. A one-of-a-kind and will be sadly missed.
I trust you are well Joseph? and thank you for this little rememberence. His words still speak true even today.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts. I am in recovery from Trumpitis, trying not to succumb to secondary infection brought on by Trump-elected. 🙂

Cohen’s passing was not good news considering the context. One fights the infection listening to/reading Cohen. CBC has some excellent Cohen material . Check out q on CBC Radio for recent show on his life and work.

      1. The shock of Trumpitis has spread even this far, though as yet no reported sightings. Thanks for the link.

    1. So true. One American television celebrity made a comment after the death of ( Canadian & Elliot Laker ) celebrity Alan Thicke along the lines of – 2016 needs a redo, too many good people gone, too many bad people got real lucky.
